Boccé at Casa di Prescott

August 16, 2016 by rot13ad57min Leave a Comment

It was a hot but beautiful day in Livermore on Saturday, August 13 when our host Bruce Prescott opened up Casa Di Prescott and its backyard to welcome the fellowship of Niles Rotarians for the annual Bocce tournament. About 40 people showed up for fun, food and fellowship that afternoon and they were not disappointed!

Our BBQ Master “Bubba” fired up the grill so that we could feast on his delicious Tri-tip, chicken and hotdogs. The food was amazing. Judy Coleman and Dave Smith’s salads were awesome! Everyone raved about Bubba’s baked beans and Lana’s “Sex in a Pan” was to die for! We stayed well hydrated in the heat with cold beverages and wine that flowed throughout the day. It was great seeing Paul Parhiala’s grandkids and Sam Forbes boys having a fun time in the pool and playing with Bruce’s Reverse Raffle prize dog and best friend, Jake. While the grill was going, teams were formed and matches played. Manohar’s son, Saideep, showed the “old folk” a thing or two on the bocce court. The final rulings were given by Bocce master Steven Lloyd and in the end the victory was seized by Don and Sandy Cole!

If you weren’t able to make it this year, I’m hoping that we left Casa Di Prescott’s better than we found it so that you will have a chance to come and experience the fun next year!

Beauty and the Beast at Starstruck Theatre

August 14, 2016 by rot13ad57min Leave a Comment

On July 23rd Niles Rotarians enjoyed a special July evening social attending Starstruck Youth Performing Arts production of Disney’s Beauty and the Beast.

An elegant dinner catered by Strizzi’s preceded the theatre event in the resort atmosphere of Chris and Beverly Louie’s Pleasanton backyard. It is always special to visit a Rotarian member’s home, and the Louie’s launched our evening with their superb setting with pool and gorgeous landscaping.

Beauty and the Beast was excellent. Nancy Godfrey, wife of our own Dr. Richard Godfrey, did a marvelous conducting job keeping singers, dancers, and the music all together. The Dublin Center for the Performing Arts and Education made us Fremont supporters wanting a theatre of our own for such an event. Thanks to Jim Brunelli and Lisa Lorenz for coordinating this successful social event.

Starstruck’s next performance, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat is coming in January, 2017.

From President Angus

What? A month has passed in my presidential year already? How time flies when you are leading the best Rotary club in the world. July was memorable for many reasons. I certainly enjoyed my two weeks in Nantucket . . . until, that is, I got word from Rick King that RI President John Germ was fining me $200 for missing two club meetings during my first month at the podium. Thank you to Past President Lisa and President Elect Rose for presiding over the meeting in my absence.

I would also like to extend my appreciation to Dirk Lorenz, our Youth Services Director, who orchestrated a bagpiper to pipe me into my first meeting on July 7. Actually, in the history of the English language, I am not sure anyone has ever used the verb “orchestrate” in relation to bagpipes before. I have to tell you that being piped into an occasion is very emotional for Scots folk, even for a pseudo-Scot like me who has been in the States since I was in high school. The last time I was piped anywhere was at my wedding in 1998, where my dad piped me into the ceremony. I am sure my wife’s family must have wondered what she had got herself into. Thank you, Dirk and all your co-conspirators, for arranging the piper. I loved it!

July was bookended with two excellent opportunities for club members to get together and do what we do best – have fun. On July 4, our newly minted Social Chair Past President Lisa spearheaded Area 3’s entry in the Fremont Fourth of July Parade. As you could see from Mary Lynn Pelican’s photos, our parade entry was fantastically decorated and had great posters publicizing the work that Rotary does in the world. Assistant Governor for Area 3 Karen Koshy, from the Fremont Warm Springs Sunrise Rotary Club, rode on the float and ensured that all the clubs in the Area were well represented. That afternoon, Past President Chuck Canada hosted his by-now annual and legendary July 4 BBQ on his newly super-sized deck. The good news is that the work Chuck and Past President Steve Landon did to extend the deck proved strong enough to hold roughly 60 Nilesians and guests. Thank you, Chuck, for opening your house again to the club.

At the end of July, our ever-busy Social Chair, Lisa, and Jim Brunelli organized an outing to the production of Beauty and the Beast staged by StarStruck Theatre. What a production! The cast and crew pulled out all the stops to bring the Disney classic to life on the stage. The standing ovation that the cast and orchestra received was well deserved. The evening began with a dinner hosted by Chris and Bev Louie at their lovely home in Pleasanton. Thank you, Chris and Bev!

So we move onto August, which is looking to be a busy and fun-filled month. On tap, we have a service project with the Fremont Chamber on August 5, Mentoring Meeting on August 9, Bocce on August 13, Hit n’ Giggle golf outing on August 26, SightNow Fundraiser on August 28, and Friday Fellowship Evenings all month long. Details for all these events will be announced on the website, in the eBulletin and at club meetings. Join us . . . and don’t forget to Keep Calm and Serve On!

In Rotary,

President Angus

Niles Rotary Visit RYLA Camp at Scott Valley

August 1, 2016 by rot13ad57min Leave a Comment

Dirk Lorenz, Youth Service Chair for Niles Rotary, led a group of Rotarians up to the RYLA Camp high in the Scotts Valley mountains to visit our sponsored high school Interactor students. RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Academy) is held once a year for leaders of the Interactor clubs in the high schools sponsored by Rotary Clubs. It is clear that from this week long experience, the Interactors have experiences they will remember for the rest of their lives. Enjoy this video Dirk put together to bring across some of the excitement and fun these Interactors experience at camp RYLA. Thank you Dirk!
